Short answer: a foam play mat worth buying costs you the material, the tile count and the finish, not a brand name, which is why our smallest size starts at €124.95 and the price per tile drops as the mat gets bigger. What people actually want to know is what they are paying for at each price point, and whether a cheaper size now boxes them in later.

The question underneath "affordable" is usually about risk, not just money: can you buy the smaller, cheaper size without regretting it in six months. The short version is yes, if the mat is built as separate tiles rather than one fixed sheet, which is the one feature that makes starting small a safe choice instead of a compromise.

What does a good foam play mat actually cost?

Price follows tile count. Our smallest mat, 120x180 cm, is six tiles and starts at €124.95, about €20.80 a tile. Our largest, 480x360 cm, is forty-eight tiles and starts at €752, about €15.70 a tile. So the size is the main cost driver, not the pattern, and the larger sizes work out cheaper per square metre.

The table below is the actual cost of each size, so you can see what you are paying for before you choose.

What are you actually paying for at each size?

Mostly square meters of floor and the material underneath them. Every size uses the same EVA foam, the same 1,2 cm thickness and the same puzzle lock edge between tiles, so a 120x180 cm mat is not a lesser version of a 480x360 cm one, it is simply fewer of the same tile.

Where price does shift slightly within one size is colour. Prices are set per colourway, so a few, like Kilim Soft Clay, sit slightly above others at the same size: 180x240 cm is €236 on most colourways and €244.95 on some. That means you should never read one price per size as fixed. Always check the size you want on the specific colour you want, which is also why the table below shows a "from" price rather than one number per row.

Size Tiles (approx.) From
120x180 cm 6 €124.95
180x240 cm 12 €236
180x360 cm 18 €342
240x360 cm 24 €440
300x360 cm 30 €530
360x360 cm 36 €612
420x360 cm 42 €686
480x360 cm 48 €752

Not sure how small you can go?

Every pattern starts at 120x180 cm, and a second mat in the same pattern locks onto the first if your baby outgrows it.

What is the smallest size that still works at 8 to 12 months?

This is where most people underbuy. A newborn doing short spells of tummy time barely uses any floor, so 120x180 cm feels generous. By 8 to 12 months, your baby is rolling, sitting and starting to pull up, and that same mat suddenly looks small, because the baby is no longer staying where you put them down.

If your room allows for it, 180x240 cm is the more realistic starting point once you are buying with the crawling months in mind rather than the newborn ones. It is twice the tile count of the smallest size, and it gives a crawling baby room to move.

Can you start small and add tiles later?

Yes, and this is the detail that makes a cheaper size a genuinely safe choice rather than a false saving. Every tile, across every size and every pattern, is the same roughly 60x60 cm puzzle piece. A 120x180 cm mat is six of those tiles. If your baby needs more floor six months later, a second mat in the same pattern locks onto the first, so you extend rather than replace.

That is the real answer to "affordable": not the cheapest single size, but a system where the smallest size is never a dead end.

Why does a foam play mat need to be a certain thickness?

Ours are 1,2 cm thick, made from EVA foam. That makes tile, laminate or wood flooring noticeably softer to sit, crawl and play on, while the seams stay flat for a baby who has just started standing. More thickness is not automatically better, it mostly changes how the surface feels underfoot.

How do you keep a foam play mat clean without washing it?

A single tile, the unit every size is built from, with the interlocking edge visible.

You wipe it with a damp cloth. EVA foam has a closed surface, so spills sit on top instead of soaking in, and a cloth lifts most messes without needing soap. It is not machine washable and should not go in a dryer, which also means there is no laundry cost to add on top of the price you see on the product page.

How do you choose between two sizes if you are still unsure?

Measure the space first, then size up if you are between two options. A baby who starts crawling uses more floor than you expect, and a mat that ends at the edge of where they play gets outgrown fast. If you want a shortcut, our most wanted list shows which patterns and sizes other parents end up choosing.

What does day to day care look like?

  • Wipe spills with a damp cloth, mild soap only if needed.
  • Avoid scouring pads and harsh abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not machine wash or tumble dry the tiles.
  • Keep the mat out of long, direct sunlight.
  • Store by separating the tiles and stacking them flat, the mat does not roll up.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest size actually good value, or a false economy?
It is a genuine starting point, because the tiles are compatible across every size, so a second mat in the same pattern can extend a small one later.

Why do two colours of the same size cost slightly different amounts?
Prices are set per colourway, so a few sit slightly higher at the same size. The product page always shows the price for the colour you pick.

Can the mat be rolled up for storage?
No. It is built from separate tiles that you take apart and stack flat rather than roll.

How long does a foam play mat typically last?
The tiles are built for daily floor use through the crawling and toddler years, and a damp cloth is all the care they need.

What if I buy the wrong size?
You have 30 days to decide, so you can lay the mat out at home and return it if it does not suit the room.
