Short answer: 120x180 cm or 180x240 cm is the usual starting point, depending on whether the mat lives in a shared living room or has a dedicated corner. The real question is less about a single "right" size and more about matching the mat to the room and the stage your baby is at, since both keep changing.

The question behind the question is usually "what happens if I guess wrong", because a play mat is a bigger purchase than most nursery items. The short version: it is a lower-risk choice than it looks, because the mat is built from separate tiles rather than one fixed sheet.

What size play mat do most rooms actually need?

120x180 cm is our best-selling size over the past year, and it tends to suit a corner of a living room or a nursery. 180x240 cm is the next step up, and it is the more realistic choice once you are planning for a crawling baby who is covering the whole room rather than staying in one spot. Past that, sizing becomes more about the room than the baby: a 300x360 cm or 360x360 cm mat is for families who want to cover most of an open-plan floor.

The table below shows every size we carry, in cm, with the tile count and starting price for each.

How many tiles does each size actually give you?

Every mat is built from roughly 60x60 cm puzzle tiles, so the size in centimetres and the tile count scale together. A 120x180 cm mat is six tiles. Double the floor, and 180x360 cm is eighteen. The full range goes up to 480x360 cm, forty-eight tiles, for families covering a dedicated playroom.

Size Tiles (approx.) From
120x180 cm 6 €124.95
180x240 cm 12 €236
180x360 cm 18 €342
240x360 cm 24 €440
300x360 cm 30 €530
360x360 cm 36 €612
420x360 cm 42 €686
480x360 cm 48 €752

Does the price change depending on which pattern you pick?

Slightly, yes. At 180x240 cm, most patterns, including Beni Ecru and Kilim Sand, are €244.95, while the Lucio line, such as Lucio Ecru, is €236 at the same size. That is a small difference, but it means you should check the price on the exact pattern you want rather than assuming every pattern costs the same at a given size. The table above shows the lowest price per size across all patterns.

What if you measure wrong and the size does not fit the room?

This is the part that makes the decision lower-risk than it feels. Because every size is built from the same tile, a second mat in the same pattern locks onto the first one. So if 120x180 cm turns out to be too small once your baby is crawling, you are not starting over, you are adding a second mat to the one you already have. There is no separate loose-tile product, the way to extend a mat is always a second mat in the same pattern.

A simple way to measure before you buy

  • Clear the area you are considering and lay out a sheet, towel or blanket at the size you are looking at.
  • Leave at least a little room around the edge for your baby to move off the mat and back on.
  • Measure doorways and stair gates near the spot, since play mats are not meant to be walked over by furniture traffic.
  • If you are between two sizes, the next size up is usually the better choice once crawling starts.
  • For the area under a high chair rather than the floor, a round splat mat is a different product built for that spot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular play mat size?
120x180 cm, our best-selling size over the past year, usually for a living room corner or smaller nursery.

Is a bigger mat always better value?
Larger sizes work out cheaper per tile, but the right size still depends on the room you actually have.

Can two mats be joined together?
Yes, as long as they are the same pattern. Every tile is about 60x60 cm, so a second mat in the same pattern puzzles onto the first to add more floor space.

Why do prices vary slightly between patterns at the same size?
Pricing is set per colourway rather than per size, so a few patterns sit a little higher or lower at the same dimensions.

What happens if I buy a size that turns out to be wrong?
You have 30 days to lay it out at home and return it if it does not suit the room.

Ready to compare sizes side by side?

Every pattern comes in all eight sizes, with 30 days to decide if it fits your room.
